PSHE at Bracken Edge Primary School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a subject that provides our children with the appropriate knowledge, expertise and understanding to allow them to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society.

Bracken Edge recognises that PSHE plays a vital role in educating our children, therefore, we teach PSHE weekly in all year groups and we consider PSHE to be a fundamental part of our curriculum.

Our PSHE curriculum develops learning through a variety of teaching and learning strategies, which results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, that enables our children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen, now and in their future roles within a global community.

It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life.

We follow a scheme of work called “You, me and PSHE” in Years 1-6. This is a clear and progressive PSHE Curriculum, which is tailored to our schools needs. There are 7 strands within the scheme which lay out age appropriate topics for the children to cover. Within each strand, there age appropriate topics for the different year groups. One topic per half term is taught to each year group. These strands are:

Before teaching Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, clear ground rules need to be established. These may also be known as a class contract or class agreement and are one of the main ways of ensuring there is a safe teaching and learning environment. At the beginning of a school year, the class teacher and children will work together to create class ground rules.  At Bracken Edge, we ensure that the ground rules are kept to and consistently revisited throughout lessons. We also clearly display these in the classroom.

If you would like to see what is taught in each year group, please see the long-term plans in the curriculum section.
