Maths at Bracken Edge

AT BRACKEN EDGE WE ENDEAVOUR TO PROMOTE ENJOYMENT, ENTHUSIASM AND CONFIDENCE FOR ALL CHILDREN IN MATHEMATICS.

Starting with the National curriculum as a base, the Mathematics curriculum has been mapped out throughout the academic year. The Mathematics Curriculum across school shows a clear progression which is in line with age related expectations. At Bracken Edge we follow the White Rose Schemes of Learning and have adopted a Mastery Approach in order for our children to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts which leads to learning that is embedded over time. Progression on a year to year basis ensures that subjects are revisited and built upon. Children are encouraged to retrieve and reference previous learning in order to make connections. We have high expectations for all children, regardless of their ability, to work through Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving activities which will support them in years to come in the wider world.

MATHS IN EYFS

Maths teaching in Early Years begins with our youngest learners. Throughout Nursery children are taught key concepts which are the building blocks of all maths learning. Children learn to recite number names in order through singing number songs and rhymes, to subitise and talk about more and less. Children learn to match and create sets, from exact matching (green to green) to comparing and talking about sets. Children learn to recognise and create patterns. Children also learn about spatial arrangements and shapes.

In Reception we build on these foundations. We follow the White Rose Scheme of Learning and a Mastery Approach to ensure learning is embedded. We also create a maths rich environment, which provides opportunities for maths to be part of our daily routines, activities and wider curriculum.

EYFS Mathematics focuses on the following aspects:

  • Cardinality and Counting (following the five counting principles)
  • Comparison
  • Composition
  • Pattern
  • Shape and Space
  • Measures

These 6 areas form the foundation of our Mathematics Curriculum and provide a platform for everything children will encounter as they progress through their maths learning at primary school.

EYFS use Development Matters and the statutory framework to design a broad curriculum to scaffold a child led syllabus covering all relevant areas for learning and development, ensuring Early Learning Goals are made accessible and assessible as a result.

White Rose Maths is excited to have produced a range of work booklets for parents and children to use over the summer or during next year. These booklets can be found on Amazon for the Kindle or downloaded below.  There is one booklet for each of the blocks for Y1 to Y6. The answers can be found in the back of the booklets.

NumBots is an online game and playing little and often will significantly improve your child’s recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts. These are critical foundations in maths. The game is designed for pupils to use efficient mental calculation strategies to add and subtract two-digit numbers, so that they can leave counting on their fingers behind!
